Fort Worth Dunbar’s Darius White, regarded as one of the top receivers in the nation, announced his commitment to Texas on Saturday during the Under Armour All-American Game in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound White, who is No. 9 in the ESPNU 150, slapped on a burnt orange Longhorns cap during the fourth quarter, bypassing caps from Florida, LSU and Oklahoma on a table in front of him. He was also reportedly interested in Oklahoma State, which was said to be making a late push for him while in Arlington for the Cotton Bowl.
“I’m going to UT,” White told ESPNU.com’s Gerry Hamilton. “Coach Cleve Bryant was big for me,” he said of Texas’ associate athletic director for football operations.
“When I talked to him he showed me a good time and seemed like a person that would really take care of me. He seemed like a father-figure type. I felt the same way about Oklahoma State, but I decided to choose UT.”
Oklahoma was thought to be the team to beat for White, who had remained mum on his decision throughout the football season, not wanting to take attention away from the Wildcats’ season. But Texas’ ears perked up when he, along with Plano West defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat, regarded as some as the nation’s top prospect, attended the Longhorns’ home finale against Kansas on Nov. 21.
“At first, I wanted to go to Texas because I’ve liked them since I was real little,” White said. “Then I started thinking if I moved off and went to Oklahoma or LSU or somewhere like that, [it would be good for a while] but my life after school and football was important. I want to live in Texas and I know Texas will look after me when I’m done with school.”
White becomes the 22nd commitment in the Longhorns’ class, including the 13th from the ESPNU 150. Texas’ recent pickup of Dallas Skyline receiver Mike Davis, who had originally committed to LSU, should give the Longhorns a potent 1-2 combination for years to come.
