Members of the Independent Pilots Association, which represents United Parcel Service Inc.’s 2,800 pilots, have offered to fly aid missions to Haiti without pay.
The pilots union has established an electronic volunteer database for its members to sign up for the missions.
Jackie Blair, a public relations manager for UPS Airlines, said Thursday the airline likely will fly aid to Haiti, but no flights have been scheduled.
The flights, she said, will be coordinated through the UPS Foundation, the nonprofit philanthropic arm of Atlanta-based UPS (NYSE: UPS).
The shipping giant said Wednesday that it will donate $1 million to Haiti relief efforts, including $500,000 in cash and $500,000 in in-kind donation of goods and services.
The cash will be divided among The American Red Cross, CARE, UNICEF and other organizations that assist with long-term relief activities.
UPS pilots flew similar missions to the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
