Ely, Minnesota – Lily the Bear, who has been an internet sensation since a camera was first set up in her den, gave birth to at least one cub today.
Lily’s hibernation has been tracked on video camera as part of a long-term research project, run by the North American Bear Center and Wildlife Research Institute.
She gave birth just after noon on Friday live as thousands watched online. You could hear the cries of the cub shortly after she gave birth.
Researchers say it is still not clear whether it is one or two cubs. According to an update on their facebook page “we watched as Lily convulsed and strained and then we heard a cub cry. However, that could easily have been the first cub crying because Lily had moved and let cold air.”
Producers say that Lily was in labor for 30 hours before giving birth. It is not clear yet if the cub or cubs are boys or girls. That will not be known until spring when there is more activity in the den.
Bear Cam Producer Doug Hajicek talked with us about Lily’s birth.
“I was amazed by the almost violent labor that she went through. she was thrashing her body about and then finally, at 11:38 CST, we heard a cry that sounded just like a human baby.”
Crying could be heard immediately after the birth. Hajicek says that’s apparently the sound cubs make when they’re born. He say that researchers had never heard before witnessing today’s live birth.
