Tonight is a partial lunar eclipse. The lunar eclipse is tonight June 26, 2010. Great news for those of us in the US too! We will see the lunar eclipse in a magnified version, which is called ‘moon illusion.’
I love that we will see the eclipse so clearly. The eclipse begins at 10:17 GMT. At that time, the moon will enter Earth’s shadow.
In general I love the ‘moon illusion’ effect. You know what it is. When the moon is very close to the horizon, the moon appears very large in the night sky. Tonight we are lucky to have that effect along with a partial lunar eclipse. It is sure to provide a lovely sight tonight.
The eclipse is only partial. At the peak of the eclipse, 54% of the Moon will be under the shadow of the Earth. The entire eclipse will last for 3 hours, so there is plenty of time for you to check it out tonight.
Do you plan to see the lunar eclipse tonight? I do. I will spend some time in the back yard tonight during the eclipse. I am excited to see it with the ‘moon illusion’ too. My husband and I own a nice Dobsonian telescope, but we won’t need it tonight for this astronomy event.
